Background:It is estimated that worldwide almost 50% of all HIV-infected individuals are women. Gender specific data on the use of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in situations were access to clinic are equal are surprisingly scarce. The overall aim of this study is to compare the use of cART (treatment start and modification, antiretroviral regimen, vitologic suppression and immunologic recovery) between genders in HIV-infected individuals participating in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS) Methods: Analysis of the SHCS database of all treatment-naive patients starting cART between 1998 and 2008.Basic socio-demographic characteristics, CD4 cell count, HIV viral load, and antiretroviral therapy are compared using the Chi-square test for categorical variables and the Mann-Whitney test for continuous variables. Cox regression is used to investigate factors associated with treatment discontinuation or incidence of treatment-limiting toxicity. Logistic regression is used to explore factors associated with virologic suppression below 50 copies/ml at 12 months after starting cART.
