Background: The choice of the initial antiretroviral regimen is flexible and influenced by several factors such as co-morbidities and physician s preference. We aim to investigate which factors determine the choice of the initial cART-regimen in treatment-naïve HIV-individuals, and whether certain factors impact on virologic suppression, treatment modification, i.e. change or switch to another regimen, within the first year of cART. Methods: We plan a retrospective analysis of the SHCS database investigating the main reasons for choosing the initial antiretroviral regimen and its impact on the rate of treatment modification during the first year of cART. Basic socio-demographic characteristics, HIV clinical stage, cardiovascular risk factors, co-medication, CD4 cell count, HIV viral load, and cART are compared using the Chi-square test or Fisher s exact test for categorical variables, and the Kruskal-Wallis test for continuous variables. Multinomial logistic regression is used to investigate factors associate with the choice of the initial antiretroviral regimen according to the 5 most frequently recommended regimens.
