Research interests

My research interests include the social and religious history of the ancient world, particularly of the Eastern Mediterranean and Egypt during Roman times and in Late Antiquity. I have published on pagan religion, early Christianity, ancient demography, household & family, women's history, and ancient environmental & climate history. I am currently leading several projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundations, 1) „The Roman Egypt Laboratory: Climate Change, Pandemics, and the Transition to Late Antiquity“ (2021–2026) and 2) "Urban Biographies of the Roman and Late Antique Worlds: Antinoopolis and Heracleopolis in Egypt, c. 100 – c. 650 CE" (2021–2026).

Urban Biographies of the Roman and Late Antique Worlds: Antinoopolis and Heracleopolis in Egypt, c. 100 - c. 650 CE

«Urban Biographies of the Roman and Late Antique Worlds» examines the development of cities in Middle Egypt in the Roman and late antique periods, focusing on the two case-studies of Antinoopolis and Heracleopolis . The project aims to illustrate the contribution of ancient papyri and other materials found in Egypt to the urban history of the Roman and late antique worlds, and more specifically to uncover continuities and changes in the lives of these two individual cities. The project team will combine archaeological approaches and digital methods with the analysis of papyri and other textual materials to build an on-line platform which integrates relevant data for both sites. Historical research on these data will confront the individual evolution for each of these two cities with broader assumptions about economic, social, cultural, and political change, in particular the transition from the Roman to the late antique period.

The Roman Egypt Laboratory: Climate Change, Societal Transformations, and the Transition to Late Antiquity

The interaction between climate change, environmental stress, and societal transformations is increasingly attracting the interest of the scientific community and the general public alike, as contemporary concerns about global warming grow. This research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and directed by Prof. Dr. Sabine R. Huebner will apply groundbreaking and innovative multidisciplinary approaches to the complex relationships between climate variability and environmental change on the one hand and the ability and capacity of human society to adapt to these challenges on the other. The third century CE was a period of grand-scale transformations and existential threats to the Roman Empire, the ancient superpower that ruled a geographically vast and ethnically diverse area comprising nearly a fourth of the world population at that time. During the third century, the Roman Empire experienced military anarchy, civil wars, rampant inflation, severe famines, dramatic changes in the religious landscape, bloody persecutions of minority groups, and raids and invasions from beyond the frontier. What were the reasons and causal relationships underlying this concurrence of adverse events? Recent research has suggested that climate variations triggered these cascading shocks, but this theory has yet to be put to scrutiny through a comprehensive interdisciplinary analysis of all available evidence. Due to its unparalleled evidence, the Roman province of Egypt can serve as a laboratory to test such hypotheses and study social vulnerability, resilience, and adaptation strategies in the face of environmental and climatic changes. This pioneering and innovative project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between climate scientists, archaeologists, and ancient historians that bridges the traditional divide between the humanities and the natural sciences. The project aims to evaluate and interpret the effects of environmental stressors, and climate change on society, economy, and politics using third-century Roman Egypt as a case study for a multi-disciplinary approach to a fervently debated transition period in Western civilization. This holistic approach to climate change and societal transformations will be the first of its kind for the Roman world and promises a major breakthrough in an increasingly intense scholarly discussion, which this project will shape and lead.

Change and Continuities from a Christian to a Muslim Society -- Egyptian Society and Economy in the 6th to 8th centuries

Die Eroberung Ägyptens durch die Araber im Jahre 642 initiierte eine neue Epoche in der Geschichte des Landes; wieder einmal Ägypten kam unter dem Einfluss einer fremden Macht. Im Gegensatz hingegen zur Machtübernahme der Römer in Ägypten knapp 700 Jahre früher fehlen jedoch detaillierte Untersuchungen in gesellschaftsgeschichtlicher, wirtschaftlicher und administrativer Hinsicht für diese Übergangsphase von der Antike ins Frühmittelalter. Sprachbarrieren und Fachgrenzen haben bislang eine Behandlung dieser einschneidenden Jahrzehnte als geschichtliches Kontinuum verhindert. Ziel dieses interdisziplinären Projekts, dass sich aus Althistorikern, Byzantinisten, Arabisten, Papyrologen und Koptologen zusammen setzt, wird es daher sein, die Kontinuitäten und Brüche beim Übergang von der klassischen bis zur nachklassischen Epoche bzw. von einer christlichen zu einer islamischen Gesellschaft aufzuzeigen. Dafür werden sowohl griechische, koptische als auch arabische Quellen ausgewertet, die den gleichen Zeitraum abdecken, aber aufgrund von künstlich gesetzte Disziplin- und Epochengrenzen bislang noch nicht umfassend und gebündelt hinweg berücksichtigt wurden.

Editionsprojekt (SNF-Projekt): Von frühen Christen, wilhelminischen Gelehrten und Nanotechnologen - Neue Herangehensweisen an Basler Zeugnisse aus der ägyptischen Wüste

Es handelt sich um die im Jahre 1900 vom Freiwilligen Mueumsverein für die Universitätsbibliothek erworbene Papyrussammlung, von denen bislang nur 26 Texte von Ernst Rabel im 1917 ediert wurden. Die übrigen Texte liegen seit mehr als einhundert Jahren unberührt, die meisten sind bislang noch nicht einmal transkribiert. Unter diesen dokumentarischen und literarischen Papyri aus ptolemäischer, römischer sowie spätantiker Zeit befinden sich auch einige Stücke von internationalem Rang, wie z.B. der älteste bekannte christliche Privatbrief aus der ersten Hälfte des 3. Jhs. Zusammen mit zwei Postdoktoranden wird Huebner nun diese Sammlung und ihre Geschichte aufarbeiten, eine gedruckte Edition und einen Konferenzband vorbereiten und die Basler Papyri auch in digitaler Form in internationalen Papyrusportalen (wie papyri.info ) zugänglich machen. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Universitätsbibliothek werden wir die Digitalisierung vornehmen. Daneben werden sich die Mitarbeiter dieses Projekts in einer Reihe von Teilprojekten mit der Geschichte der Basler Papyrussammlung und einzelnen Papyri der Sammlung beschäftigen. Drei der Papyri wollen wir auch an der Columbia University in New York City einer nanotechnologischen Untersuchung unterziehen. Mit Hilfe eines Micro-Ramen Spectrometer wird die Tinte auf ihre chemische Zusammensetzung und auf ihr Alter untersucht. Es handelt sich hier um ein neues bahnbrechendes Analyseinstrument für antike Manuskripte, das im Jahre 2014 an der Columbia University in New York City von einem multidisziplinären Forscherteam entwickelt wurde ( http://cise.columbia.edu/AncientInk ).
