Probability theory

Probability theory is a branch of mathematics that is concerned with the analysis of random phenomena. It is applied in many fields such as physics, biology, computer science and finance. It also has many links with other areas of mathematics, such as analysis, combinatorics, and mathematical physics.

The Probability Theory Group in Basel focuses on the following areas of probability theory:

  • stochastic processes in random environment, in particular random walks and branching random walks
  • long-range percolation models on (random) graphs
  • dynamic and static properties of mean-field spin glasses
  • spatial population models with local self-interactions
