The volume will investigate the 90s as a time of wide-ranging artistic transformations embedded in societal and structural changes and as a topos created in later narratives and imaginations. By identifying five modes of narrating, remembering and imagining the 90s, the contributions approach the Post-Soviet 90s from a holistic point of view, combining diverse medial, discursive and regional perspectives. Taking into the account the very large and heterogenic Post-Soviet space and the very different developments in social and political structures after the 1990s, the volume investigates, how the artistic fields reflect these developments differently in different regions, engage in supportive or subversive practices and offer spaces of reflection that go beyond political and social observations and argumentations. The contributions from experts of the U.S., Western Europe, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia working in different disciplines (literary, film, theater and performance studies as well as sociology of culture) expand upon cultural, literary, film and theatrical fields of the Post-Soviet space - and through them also political, social and economic developments -, concentrating each on specific material that allows to showcase a typical development in the 90s, about the 90s or comparing moments in both the decade itself and its later conceptualization.
