In this project we have collected a group of scholars working on different periods and regions of the Mediterranean to study the family at the transition from the classical Greco-Roman period over late antiquity to the early medieval and Arab world of the Cairo Geniza, spanning a time range from the second millennium BCE to the fourteenth century CE. We study the family in various ancient and medieval societies inhabiting the regions around the Mediterranean Sea as a continuum in an attempt to break down artificial boundaries between academic disciplines, something rarely achieved because of language and institutional barriers that prevent scholars working jointly on the same research questions. The full potential of the study of the family as a mirror for deeply ingrained social patterns has not yet been fully explored for the premodern Mediterranean.
