There is great deal of interest in the interface between cold atoms and condensed-matter physics. On the one hand, the fact that the parameters of optical lattices can be tuned in a wide range allows the investigation of condensed-matter phenomena like phase transitions. On the other hand, optical lattices offer the possibility to study new phenomena unknown in traditional condensed-matter physics.
