Current reports on hospital quality communicate numbers of patients treated, rates of death and length of stay for defined diagnoses related groups. Patients' assessments of hospital care have so far not been included. However, available reports of hospital quality - typically generated by third parties - have generated significant public interest, in spite of their poor quality and their ambiguous results. In addition, an introduction of patient-supplied quality assessment may have inadvertent but fortuitous effects in that stakeholders may invest in treatment-related interaction between patients and care professionals in the form of information exchange. Such active participation and empowerment of the patient within the context of institutional learning may have its own set of advantages. In cooperation with the Forschungsgruppe Spitalmanagement , University Hospital in Basel, we therefore aim at developing and validating patients' quality assessment of their hospital care that could be included in complex questionnaires. The identification and validation is accomplished in a Mixed Methods Design.
