This single center study aims to investigate the association between patients' insurance class, healthcare resource utilization, and clinical outcomes during intensive care. By comparing patients with different insurance classes and adjusting for relevant demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, comorbidities, diagnosis, severity of illness, and treatment measures taken, we aim to determine whether insurance class is associated with differences in the intensity and utilization of intensive care as well as patient outcomes. This study will provide novel insights into an underexplored aspect of intensive care delivery within the Swiss healthcare system, characterized by high healthcare expenditure, a dense hospital network, and substantial availability of healthcare resources.
