Dissertation Yang: Sebastian Castellio’s Theologia Germanica (1557)

This dissertation provides a textual and theological examination of Sebastian Castellio’s 1557 Latin translation of the Theologia Deutsch. Investigating both Castellio’s philological translation methodologies and his strategic deployment of paratextual elements, the project reconstructs a moment in the treatise’s early modern reception. Furthermore, this study demonstrates how the Theologia Deutsch serves as an important hermeneutical lens for his thought, thereby uncovering deeper nuances in his intellectual context, including his arguments on religious tolerance.
