Politische Systeme, in denen gewählte Repräsentanten für ihr Verhalten im Amt zur Verantwortung gezogen werden können, bieten den Bürgern eher vorteilhafte Resultate. Die grundlegenden Instrumente, um politische Verantwortlichkeit zu etablieren, sind Wahlen, Gewaltenteilung und Offenlegungsregeln. Diese Institutionen beeinflussen jedoch auch die (Selbst-)Selektion mehr oder minder kompetenter und ehrlicher Kandidaten und über diesen Kanal ihrerseits die Ergebnisse des politischen Prozesses. Dieser zweite Aspekt liegt im Zentrum unserer Forschung. Ein erstes Projekt (gemeinsam mit Thomas Brändle) befasst sich mit den (institutionellen) Gründen und Konsequenzen der starken Repräsentation öffentlicher Bediensteter in vielen Legislativorganen. Ein zweites Projekt (gemeinsam mit Ulrich Matter) untersucht die Auswirkungen der Vertretung von Rechtsanwälten in der Legislative auf die Ausgestaltung des Rechts. Ein drittes Projekt (gemeinsam mit Nicolas Schreiner) analysiert die politische Selektion in der direkten Demokratie.
