Anglo-Swiss Travel Accounts in the Early Modern Period

This dissertation focuses on Anglo-Swiss travel accounts between 1600 and 1780. Being a neglected field in research, the project aims to uncover and examine both Swiss travellers in Great Britain and British travellers in Switzerland by compiling archival and printed sources as well as studying them in detail. The dual angle of my study will focus on insights into reciprocity, points of negotiations and exchange that offer a mutual understanding of travellers in the respective countries, rather than just focusing on travellers from just one country. The fundamental question at the heart of the project is how these texts change our understanding of cultural exchange, negotiation, and travel in the period between 1600–1780. How did writing and travel conventions change and stereotypes evolve? How big is the intertextual influence on travel texts as well as experiences and how are their reflections of the ‘Other’ influenced by themselves and why.

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the project, digital methods play a key role in compiling and analysing the materials, making them accessible to the public, and experimenting with innovative ways of approaching and presenting the texts. The SwissBritNet’s database will offer a platform to present and make the materials available for researchers as well as the public. Along with the database, selected stories will give a deeper insight into certain texts or people.
