EGRAPSA: Retracing the evolutions of handwritings in Greco-Roman Egypt thanks to digital palaeography

Papyri preserved by the dry climate of Egypt are an unparalleled source of information on the Ancient World. Around 80,000 papyri written in ancient Greek have already been published, covering a millennium between the time of Alexander the Great and the Arab conquest of Egypt (end of 4th c. BCE to early 8th c. CE). However, their large number, their diversity and their current dispersion have impeded a comprehensive grasp of their nature and content. In particular, palaeography, as the study of handwritings that has the potential to unveil who, where and when a text has been written, still relies on experts' assertions which rarely reach consensus. New technological advances in Computer Science allow now building the big picture of the writing culture of Greco-Roman Egypt and developing scientific analyses of scripts. The goal of EGRAPSA project (literally "I have written" in Ancient Greek) is to provide a new theoretical framework to the palaeography of Greek papyri. Starting from sound evidence, it aims at retracing the evolutions of handwritings, generating a model that, in turn, can contribute at organizing the papyrological documentation in a coherent panorama, improving the solidity of dates and writer identifications made on palaeographical grounds. The ground-breaking dimension of the project is not only in its scope that encompasses the entire papyrological documentation in its complexity, and in its conceptual approach to make sense of the plurality of scripts by discerning evolution phenomena but also in its methodological choice to measure similarities and explain evolutions by focusing on the reconstruction of the dynamics of writing, thus to literally re-trace handwritings.

Reuniting fragments, identifying scribes and characterizing scripts: the Digital Paleography of Greek and Coptic papyri.

Greek and Coptic papyri preserved in the sands of Egypt are one of our main sources for Classical and early Christian literature as well as for the ancient History of the eastern Mediterranean world from the Hellenistic period to the Middle Ages. However, the texts are often incomplete, broken accidentally during the course of time or intentionally, two small pieces being more valuable than a single larger one on the antiquities market. Palaeography, as the study of ancient writings, has two main fields of application: one is to identify the specific handwriting of one individual over several fragments. The second is to provide dating arguments in the absence of other criteria, Greek and Coptic scripts having evolved over time. The present research project aims to lay the foundation for an online interface through which papyrologists would be able to look for similar - or identical - handwritings to a given papyrus and typical samples of writings for a given period. To reach this ambitious goal, this project will first focus on three delimitated and complementary case studies: the papyri containing Homer's Iliad, the archive of Dioscorus of Aphrodito (6th c. A.D.) which is the richest archive of the Byzantine period and the Coptic archive of Papas which were found broken in a jar and thus are a real jigsaw puzzle. Change and Continuities from a Christian to a Muslim Society -- Egyptian Society and Economy in the 6th to 8th centuries

Die Eroberung Ägyptens durch die Araber im Jahre 642 initiierte eine neue Epoche in der Geschichte des Landes; wieder einmal Ägypten kam unter dem Einfluss einer fremden Macht. Im Gegensatz hingegen zur Machtübernahme der Römer in Ägypten knapp 700 Jahre früher fehlen jedoch detaillierte Untersuchungen in gesellschaftsgeschichtlicher, wirtschaftlicher und administrativer Hinsicht für diese Übergangsphase von der Antike ins Frühmittelalter. Sprachbarrieren und Fachgrenzen haben bislang eine Behandlung dieser einschneidenden Jahrzehnte als geschichtliches Kontinuum verhindert. Ziel dieses interdisziplinären Projekts, dass sich aus Althistorikern, Byzantinisten, Arabisten, Papyrologen und Koptologen zusammen setzt, wird es daher sein, die Kontinuitäten und Brüche beim Übergang von der klassischen bis zur nachklassischen Epoche bzw. von einer christlichen zu einer islamischen Gesellschaft aufzuzeigen. Dafür werden sowohl griechische, koptische als auch arabische Quellen ausgewertet, die den gleichen Zeitraum abdecken, aber aufgrund von künstlich gesetzte Disziplin- und Epochengrenzen bislang noch nicht umfassend und gebündelt hinweg berücksichtigt wurden.

Von frühen Christen, wilhelminischen Gelehrten und Nanotechnologen - Neue Herangehensweisen an Basler Zeugnisse aus der ägyptischen Wüste

Die Universitätsbibliothek in Basel ist im Besitz einer kleinen Papyrussammlung von rund 60 griechischen, koptischen, lateinischen, hieratischen und arabischen Papyri aus ptolemäischer, römischer sowie byzantinischer Zeit. Die Basler Papyrussammlung umfasst einige Papyri von erheblichem internationalem Interesse, wie beispielsweise den wohl ältesten bekannten christlichen Privatbrief (P.Bas. 16), oder die ersten abendländischen Gelehrten bekannt gewordenen Papyri (P.Bas. 1 A und P.Bas. 1 B+C). Letztere stammen vermutlich aus Italien und wurden bereits im Jahre 1591 der Basler Universität geschenkt - 300 Jahre bevor die Kunde von Papyrusfunden in Ägypten nach Europa drang. Die zwischen Plexiglasplatten konservierten Papyrusdokumente der Basler Sammlung lagern in zwei Schubladen in der Sammlung für Alte Handschriften im Sonderlesesaal der Universitätsbibliothek Basel. Seit beinahe 100 Jahren hat sich niemand mehr mit diesen Dokumenten befasst. Der Großteil der Basler Papyri wurde noch nicht veröffentlicht, geschweige denn transkribiert, übersetzt und kommentiert. Eine Papyrusurkunde veröffentlichte der an der Universität Basel als Professor für Rechtsgeschichte lehrende Ernst Rabel (Basel 1906-1910) bereits im Jahre 1909, fünfundzwanzig weitere dann erst mehrere Jahre nach seinem Weggang aus Basel als "Papyrusurkunden der Öffentlichen Bibliothek der Universität zu Basel" während des 1. Weltkriegs im Jahre 1917. Einen weiteren Band mit den übrigen Papyri in Basel hat es nie gegeben, vor allem deswegen weil Rabel bereits 1910 wieder verließ und in der Folgezeit das Departement für Altertumswissenschaften keine Papyrologen mehr aufzuweisen hatte. Ziel des Projekts ist es, alle Texte zu katalogisieren, digitalisieren, übersetzen und kommentieren und eine Edition der gesamten Basler Papyrussammlung in Druckform und digital online in internationalen Papyrusportalen im open-access zur Verfügung zu stellen. Wir werden zudem papyrologische Workshops für fortgeschrittene Studierende der Universität Basel und Nachbaruniversitäten anbieten, um das Interesse der jungen Generation an der Papyrologie zu wecken. Des Weiteren wollen wir exemplarisch anhand ausgewählter Stücke der Basler Sammlung neueste Forschungsrichtungen innerhalb der Papyrologie erproben. Zum einen wollen wir auf der Kooperation von Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften aufbauend drei Papyri aus der Basler Sammlung einer nanotechnologischen Untersuchung am Nanoscience Center der Columbia University in New York unterziehen. Es handelt sich hier um ein neues bahnbrechendes Analyseinstrument für antike Manuskripte, das im Jahre 2013 an der Columbia University von einem multidisziplinären Forscherteam entwickelt wurde und 2014 verfeinert wurde (http://cise.columbia.edu/AncientInk).
