The research field focuses on urological infections, with a particular emphasis on antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic stewardship in urology. The aim is to promote the rational, evidence-based use of antibiotics while reducing the emergence and spread of resistant pathogens. A central component of this work includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the use of antibiotic prophylaxis prior to endourological procedures. These studies critically synthesize existing evidence, support clinical decision-making, and have already been incorporated into clinical guidelines.
In addition, multicenter randomized controlled trials represent a key pillar of the research, particularly in evaluating strategies to reduce antibiotic use. A major focus lies in avoiding unnecessary antibiotic prophylaxis, especially in the context of recurrent urinary tract infections and endourological interventions. The objective is to ensure that prophylaxis is administered only when clinically justified and supported by robust evidence.
Overall, this research contributes to a patient-safe, sustainable, and resistance-conscious approach to urological care. A planned project involves a multicenter randomized controlled trial investigating the optimal duration of antibiotic prophylaxis prior to endourological procedures in patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria.
