Exercise and Environmental Physiology (E-Phys)

The exercise and environmental physiology (E-Phys) group aims to better understand how physical activity affects health with and without accounting for environmental exposures. Nested within the University of Basel's Department for Sport, Exercise and Health, the E-Phys group currently investigates how physical activity affects development and aging in pediatric oncology patients and also in older adults. A particular focus is on how sex and gender dimensions affect health benefits derived from physical activity in a changing climate. Combining qualitative, quantitative, and participatory methods, the E-Phys group studies how environmental factors such as ambient heat, air pollution, green- and blue spaces, but also elements of the built environment affect the health benefits derived from physical activity, and also how physical activity can serve as a sustainable solution in the mitigation of environmental threats linked to climate change and continued urbanization.
