Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management of Chronic Cardiovascular and Renal Disorders

Our research group is engaged in clinical research on cardiovascular and renal diseases in general and the underlying risk factors and prevention options in particular.

Our main focus is on improving the diagnosis of hypertension, the early detection of underlying pathophysiology, organ interactions, and consequential target organ damage. In addition, we investigate strategies for optimizing therapy—this includes questions about the timing of therapy initiation, the selection of appropriate medications, the development and testing of new active substances, and the promotion of adherence. We investigate the heart, kidneys, liver, and metabolic processes in their interaction. This holistic approach allows us to better understand interconnected disease mechanisms. A central goal is to improve diagnostic and treatment pathways for the benefit of patients.

Another focus is on cardiomyopathies, particularly their diagnosis, especially in the context of hypertension, and clinical phenotyping to enable personalized treatment.

Furthermore, in addition to research in Basel, members of our group collaborate with clinical and research institutions in Tanzania and Lesotho. Through this international focus, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of regional differences in disease development, diagnosis, and therapy, and to improve care in different health care systems.
